The Inside of the Art Institute TV set at the Paper Tiger Exhibit

May 19, 2011

The exhibit at the San Francisco Art Institute was supposed to be a giant TV set. The visitors had to walk in through a broken TV screen and the floor was painted like a circuit board with giant resistors and transistors. Inside the set were five "myths": The Myth of Discovery (the ship in the background); The Myth of Choice (the supermarket with stacks of Bush water bottles); The Myth of Free Information (a miniature DC with information about media regulations); The Myth of Equality (a pyramid of all the different tools-- from shovels to computers; The Myth of High Art (a pedestal playing "enhanced product notices" on a public television ballet show. In the front, to the side of the entrance was a workshop where people could build their own transmitters and create low power radio.
